The CEL meets an increasing need for information on the functioning of living natural and man-made ecosystems in the field of the environmental and engineering sciences.
Therefore, and in order to answer at best to requests from within EPFL and outside, the CEL has split its expertise into two smaller divisions focusing on complementary activities:
- the “Central Environmental Analytical Laboratory” (CEAL) and
- the “Central Environmental Molecular Biology Laboratory” (CEMBL)
The CEL provides services, teaching and coaching as well as technical assistance to all professors and research groups associated with the Environmental Engineering Institute (IIE) and collaborators from the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) or other EPFL schools.
The CEL, which is run by Florian Breider, is composed of four lab technicians, two apprentices and two senior researchers.
CEAL – Central Environmental Analytical Laboratory
The field of expertise offered by the CEAL staff covers the main traditional techniques applied in chemical and physical analytical chemistry.
CEAL also conducts its own researches in environmental analytical chemistry.
CEMBL – Central Environmental Molecular Biology Laboratory
The field of expertise offered by the CEMBL staff covers the main traditional techniques applied in bacteriology, as well as up-to-date molecular techniques applied to the fields of environmental and molecular biology.
